Surah Al-Fajr (The Dawn) Tafsir
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the dawn
Allah takes an oath by the dawn and the light it brings.
And [by] ten nights
Allah takes a second oath by the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah and the virtues they bring.
And [by] the even and the odd
And another oath by every single and dual creation.
And [by] the night when it passes
And an oath by the night when it comes and the darkness it brings.
Is there [not] in that an oath for one of perception?
Is there not in all of the above oaths, benefits and wisdoms for people?
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Ad
Do you not see, O Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم what your Lord did to the people of Prophet Hud, the nation of ‘Ad?
Iram, who had lofty pillars
They were the people of Iram who would built tall structures with huge pillars.
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
The likes of which were never created before upon earth.
And Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
And what your Lord did to the nation of Thamud, the people of Salih who would carve their houses out of rocks?
And Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                And what your Lord did with Pharaoh, the leader of vast armies who would obey his orders?
All of whom oppressed within the lands
All these nations used their skills to oppress others weaken than them.
And increased therein the corruption
Instead of making things better, they only increased it in evil.
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment
So Allah punished them severely.
Indeed, your Lord is in observation
Allah always observes and gives people time to change, but when they refuse His
punishment is severe.
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and is generous to him and favors him, he
says, “My Lord has honored me.”
When Allah blesses people with favors and is generous to them, they think it is
because Allah must love them and honor them.
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated
And then when they are tried with hardship and difficulty, they think it is because Allah
does not love them.
No! But you do not honor the orphan.
This is not the case. Rather, Allah honors those who obey Him.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        But you don’t care for the orphan.
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor
Nor do you encourage others to feed the poor and needy.
And you consume inheritance, devouring altogether
And you unjustly take inheritance from others and consume it.
And you love wealth with immense love

Your love of wealth is so extreme you will do anything to attain it.
No! When the earth has been leveled—pounded and crushed
This should not be how you are! When the earth shakes and is crushed on the Day of
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank
And Allah comes forth with rows of angels to hold people to account.
And brought that Day, is Hell—that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will
be the remembrance?
And you see the Hellfire, on that Day you will realize your sins, but realizing on that Day
will be too late and of no benefit.
He will say, “Oh, I wish I had sent ahead for my life.”
That will be a Day of regret where people will wish they can go back and do good deeds.
So on that Day, none will punish as His punishment.
On that Day, there will be no punishment more severe than Allah’s punishment.
And none will bind as His binding
And none will hold to account or bind the evil doers as Allah does.
O reassured soul
The comforted soul on that Day will be the one that worked in this life for the next.
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him]
It will return to Allah happy, and Allah will be pleased with it.
And enter among My servants
It will enter in the company of the righteous servants of Allah.
And enter My paradise.
And together, they will enter into Paradise.
