Surah al abasa (He Frowned) Tafsir
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
The Prophet frowned and turned away
The face of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم frowned and his facial expressions changed and he turned away.
Because there came to him the blind man
When the blind companion, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum came to him seeking guidance, and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was occupied with calling the leaders of Quraysh.
But what would make you perceive, that perhaps he might be purified
How do you know which of them will benefit? Perhaps the blind man’s questions will purify his heart.
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
Or he will be reminded and as a result better himself.
As for he who thinks himself without need
As for those who don’t really want or think they need guidance.
To him you give attention
You pay them more attention and listen to them more.
And not upon you if he will not be purified
And you are not harmed by their refusal to accept guidance nor is it your fault.
But as for he who came to you striving
As for the blind man who was eager to meet you.
While he fears
And he fears Allah, seeking guidance.
From him you are distracted
You are busied from him with others who are less deserving.
No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder
Rather, this chapter is a reminder for you and all those who seek to be reminded and guided.
So whoever wills may remember it
So those who wish will remember Allah and benefit from His revelation.
In honoured sheets
It is the Qur’an, in honoured pages.
Exalted and purified
They are raised high in honour, pure from any deficiency or mistake.
By the hands of messenger-angels
Carried by the angels who bring revelation from Allah to His chosen servants.
Noble and dutiful
Angels that are noble, dutiful and honourable in their responsibilities.
Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he
The disbelieving person is cursed due to his disbelief.
From what substance did He create him?
Does he not reflect and think about how Allah created him?
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him
He was created from a drop of liquid and then grew in stages.
Then He eased the way for him
Then the paths of good and evil were made clear for him.
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him
And then he will die and be buried in the earth.
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him
And when Allah decrees, he will be brought back to life and held to account for his deeds.
No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him
It is not as the disbelievers think that there is no Hereafter. And they have yet to follow and obey Allah’s commands.
Then let mankind look at his food
Let them also think about the food Allah gave to them and where it came from.
How We poured down water in torrents
Water comes down in the form of rain from the sky.
Then We broke open the earth, splitting
And the earth uses that water to bring forth all types of plants and vegetation.
And caused to grow within it grain
From those plants are all varieties of grains.
And grapes and herbage
Grapes and herbs, and shrubbery which livestock feed on.
And olive and palm trees
Olives and dates from palm trees.
And gardens of dense shrubbery
And gardens containing all types of trees.
And fruit and grass
And fruit, plants and shrubs.
Enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock
You benefit from all of this and use it, as do your grazing animals.
But when there comes the Deafening Blast
When the Day of Judgement strikes with the deafening sound of its trumpet.
On the Day a man will flee from his brother
A person will run away from their own blood brother.
And their mother and father.
And his mother and his father
And his wife and his children
And their own wife and children.
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him
Every person will only care and worry about themselves and forget others.
Faces, that Day, will be bright
The faces of the righteous that Day will be brightened and in light.
Laughing, rejoicing at good news
They will be happy, laughing and joyous.
And faces, that Day, will have upon them dust
Other faces that Day, those of the evil will be darkened and dusty.
Blackness will cover them
Overcome by humiliation and shame.
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones
This will be the state of those who disbelieved in Allah and sinned against Him.
