Surah An-Nazi’at (Those Who Yearn) Tafsir
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By those [angels] who extract with violence
Allah takes an oath by the angels which take the souls of the disbelievers with harshness and ferocity.
And those who remove with ease
And by the angels who remove the souls of the believers with ease and gentleness.
And those who glide swimming
And by the angels who glide as they descend to the earth and ascend to the heavens.
And those who race each other in a race
And the angels that race and hasten to fulfil the commands of Allah.
And those who arrange [each] matter
And the angels that carry out the commands of Allah and the duties Allah has placed upon them.
On the Day the blast will convulse
You will be resurrected on the Day the earth will shake and tremble with the first blowing of the trumpet causing all living things to die.
There will follow it the subsequent [one]
After which a second trumpet will sound to resurrect everyone.
Hearts, that Day, will tremble
On that Day, the hearts of the disbelievers will be shaking with terror and fear.
Their eyes humbled
Their eyes will be humbled from the terrors which they see that Day.
They are saying, Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state?
In this life, they would deny the resurrection and question whether there would be life after death.
Even if we should be decayed bones?
And whether their decayed bones could be regathered and reused.
They say, That, then, would be a losing return
Such a life they said would be a loss.
Indeed, it will be but one shout
It is only a single blow of the trumpet.
And suddenly they will be upon the earth’s surface
And with that blowing, all will be standing on the surface after they were within it.
Has there reached you the story of Moses?
Have you heard of the story of Musa?
When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa
When Allah spoke to him directly in the valley of Tuwa.
Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed
Allah commanded him to go to Pharaoh who had done much evil upon the earth.
And say to him, Would you [be willing to] purify yourself?
And to say to him, Do you want to cleanse your heart and fill it with belief?
And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?
I will then guide you to Allah and His obedience, and you would have piety.
And he showed him the greatest sign
Musa was shown the great miracles of the staff and unharmed hand.
But Pharaoh denied and disobeyed
But Pharaoh rejected Musa and chose to disobey Allah.
Then he turned his back, striving
Instead, he turned away and spent all his effort fighting Musa.
And he gathered and called out
Pharaoh called his people and ordered them to gather.
And said, “I am your most exalted lord”
He proclaimed to them that he alone is their lord.
So Allah seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first
Thus Allah punished him in this life and the next for the first and last of his sins.
Indeed in that is a warning for whoever would fear
Pharaoh was made a lesson for those who would follow a similar path.
Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? Allah constructed it
Is the resurrection of mankind more difficult for Allah than creating the heavens?
He raised its ceiling and proportioned it
Allah raised the sky above us like a ceiling with no pillars and perfected it in size.
And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness
He caused darkness to come with the sun setting and light with the sun rising.
And after that He spread the earth
After the creation of the heavens, He created the sky and spread it out.
He extracted from it its water and its pasture
From it came its waters and springs and all types of plants and vegetation.
And the mountains He set firmly
The mountains He placed firmly upon the earth like pegs.
As provision for you and your grazing livestock
All of this He made as blessings for you and the benefit of your animals.
But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity
When the Great Day of Judgement comes with all that it will bring.
The Day when man will remember that for which he strove
Man will see all of their actions from good and bad and will acknowledge it all.
And Hellfire will be exposed for those who see
The Hellfire will be brought out and seen clearly by all.
So as for he who transgressed
On that Day, the one who disobeyed Allah.
And preferred the life of the world
And worked for this life only at the expense of the next.
Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge
Their final abode will be the Hellfire.
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination
As for those who feared the standing and accounting before Allah, and strived to control their desires and keep away from the unlawful.
Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge
Then Paradise will be their final abode.
They ask you about the Hour: when is its arrival?
The disbelievers ask you mockingly, “When will the Day of Judgement precisely come?”
In what [position] are you that you should mention it?
It is not for you, O Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم to determine this or know its timing.
To your Lord is its finality
Rather, it is Allah who controls it and determines its timing.
You are only a warner for those who fear it
Your duty, O Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, is to warn people about it.
It will be, on that Day they see it, as though they had not remained except for an afternoon or a morning thereof
On the Day of Judgement due to its terrors, when they look back at their lives, it will only seem as If they spent a part of a day in this world.
